In celebration of 30 years of greatness for the Chili Open, we are honored to announce that this year’s recipient is George L. Murphy Jr., CEO of Wayne Homes. George and Wayne Homes have made significant efforts to improve and established relationships between community leaders and the Akron Rotary Camp. We are very grateful for their longtime support to the Chili Open and Rotary Camp for Children with Special Needs.
George Murphy, the President and CEO of Wayne Homes, maintains a corporate support office in Green, Ohio which serves a four-state building area through ten sales and model centers. Wayne Homes is a forty-five-year-old custom homebuilding company that specializes in scattered site construction. It has twice been named ‘America’s Best Builder’, has been featured as “One of the Best Building Companies to Work for in America” by Builder Magazine and is recognized as one of only a handful of builders to deliver outstanding customer experiences for over four decades. Wayne Homes’ referral rate exceeds fifty percent, nominally five times the industry average, on well over 500 custom home sales per year. The company has received two National Housing Quality awards and is honored as one of the best companies to work for, having garnered multiple ‘North Coast 99’ accolades.
In his prior role as the Corporate Vice President of Construction, George maintained oversight of all homebuilding operations in Ohio and the surrounding states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana, and West Virginia. He directed all company efforts in Construction, Warranty Service, Quality Control, Safety, and Recruiting.
Mr. Murphy joined Wayne Homes in 2003 as its Louisville Division President. In that role he directed all phases of home building: finance, sales, construction and service. In 2005 he became Wayne Homes’ Corporate Vice President of Construction; and has since earned the company’s President and CEO titles.
Prior to joining Wayne Homes, George was a Regional Director for T.K. Constructors where he directed existing operations and formed new ones, opening offices in both Lima and Columbus, Ohio. His professional background includes establishing his own Indiana custom home building and remodeling business in 1994, and as a Research Chemist with Dow Chemical Inc.
Mr. Murphy has served on the advisory board at Ohio State University-ATI and on the Civil Engineering Technology Advisory Committee at Stark State University, the Board of Directors of the Stark County BIA and as Director of the Five County Building Officials’ Association.
George received a BS from Saginaw Valley State University, Saginaw, Michigan. He and his wife Ann have four children and reside in Medina, Ohio.
